A Life of Service

Father Charles R. Carroll devoted nearly half a century to bringing the Gospel and the sacraments to North‑Central West Virginia. Ordained in 1933 after studies in Catonsville and Baltimore, he began as a hospital chaplain in Clarksburg and quickly assumed care for a constellation of mission churches spread across three counties.
Early Years & Vocation
Born in Wheeling on November 25, 1904 and baptized at St. Joseph Cathedral, Charles R. Carroll studied at St. Charles College and St. Mary’s Seminary. He was ordained a priest on June 10, 1933, and soon began ministry in the region he would serve for the next 49 years.
Founding Pastor of All Saints
Bridgeport was opened as a mission in 1934 with home Masses. In 1946 All Saints was elevated to parish status and Father Carroll was named its first pastor. The former Rachel Chapel was dedicated as All Saints Catholic Church on May 16, 1954; parish school classes began that year and a dedicated building opened in 1956. In 1973, the school joined the Harrison County Catholic School System.

Heart of a Pastor
Parishioners remember a priest who showed up: visiting the sick, comforting families, organizing food fairs and Little League, and even typing weekly bulletins in distinctive green ink for 49 years. His spirituality centered on the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the words, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

Legacy & Remembrance
In 1980 he entrusted parish leadership to Father Hilarion (Larry) Cann, continuing mission care until 1982. Father Carroll died on December 6, 1993; his memorial Mass was offered at All Saints, and his ashes rest in Bridgeport Cemetery. Today, devotion to his memory continues, and a prayer with diocesan imprimatur (June 25, 2025) invites the faithful to ask God to consider a cause toward sainthood.
