Graces Favors and Miracles

Understanding Miracles, Graces, and the Path to Sainthood

In the Catholic Church, the process of canonization is designed to carefully discern whether a person is in heaven and worthy of being proclaimed a saint. For a candidate such as Father Charles Carroll, the Church examines evidence of a life of heroic virtue, enduring holiness, and, ultimately, miracles attributed to the person’s intercession. These miracles are understood as God’s confirmation that the individual is alive in heaven and interceding on behalf of those on Earth.

The Church applies very strict criteria when evaluating miracles. Most often, a recognized miracle involves a complete and instantaneous healing that cannot be explained by medical science. Such cases are subjected to extensive review by medical experts and Church authorities to ensure there is no reasonable natural explanation. This rigorous process reflects the Church’s commitment to clarity and certainty in matters of sainthood.

Alongside miracles, the Church also acknowledges the reality of graces and favors received through prayer. Graces may include spiritual growth, renewed faith, or interior strength, while favors are specific requests believed to be granted through a holy person’s intercession. While these do not meet the formal definition of a miracle, they are meaningful signs of God’s ongoing work. The many reports gathered by the Father Charles Carroll Guild reflect this belief and serve both to advance his cause and to deepen the faithful’s understanding of how God acts through the communion of saints.

Praying with Father Carroll

Praying with the saints is an ancient Christian practice. As sisters and brothers who have gone before us to God, the saints are our friends in heaven, ready to help and intercede for us. You can help further Father Carroll’s canonization cause by bringing your needs and the needs of our world before God with the following prayer:

Eternal Father,
Source of all blessings, you guide us through your Son,
Jesus Christ, and the work of the Holy Spirit.
Father Charles R. Carroll was known by many
as a man of faith, virtue, and charity.

If it is your will, may his life continue to inspire us
to follow Christ faithfully. Through Christ, our Lord.

Amen.
